SOUTHERN LAOS ITINERARY

DAY 1 | Pakse – Champasak | 120 – 160 KM

After Breakfast and familiarisation with the bikes and a look at the ride for the day, we head south and board the ferry that takes us across the Mekong to Champasak. Ride into small river villages and stay the night in “The View”, a small resort right on the Mekong with great food and gardens.

DAY 2 | Champasak – Don Det | 140 – 160 KM

After a great breakfast on the Mekong, a visit to the world heritage Vat Phou temple, set under the magnificent hills bordering the Mekong, is a “must see”. Leaving the temple we ride along the banks of the Mekong heading south to the 4000 islands. This is mostly a small one lane village track that is not on maps but accessible and great fun as villagers are amazed and happy to see you. We take three ferries before arriving at Don Det. We will stay at Baba guesthouse, right on the Mekong and enjoy cold drinks while watching the sunset over the great river.

DAY 3 | Don Det – Attapeu | 200 – 220 KM

After breakfast we catch the ferry and ride north to the 18A turnoff to Attapeu. This is quite a long day (approx. 210k’s) and around six hours riding through lots of small rivers and streams. As it is dry season they are very low and fun to ride through. This is the remote area and it is very rare to see tourists. The people are very friendly and helpful. We stay in Attapeu overlooking the Xe Kong river.

DAY 4 | Attapeu – Salavan | 160 – 180 KM

Today we head north and ride (app 167k’s) to Salavan and the Bolven Plateau. Our first destination is the ferry crossing over the Xe Kong. We get higher and the temperatures are lower and makes a Pleasant change. There are numerous waterfalls to see and photograph along the way. Staying the night in Salavan.

DAY 5 | Salavan – Tad E-Tu falls | 110 – 130 KM

Today’s ride is one of exploration and stops at various places of interest on the plateau. Around three hours of riding to the Tad E -Tu resort where you will be amazed at the noise of the falls and it’s beauty. The bungalows are next to the falls and can be explored. The restaurant is also next to the falls and serves great food.

DAY 6 | Tad E-Tu falls – Bachiang | 140 -160 KM

After breakfast we take a track through the rubber plantations on our way to Pakse. The plantations are expansive and very interesting. Some of the riding is single track and we will also see fantastic views through the valleys of the Bolven Plateau. We stay at the fabulous Bachiang golf resort with its beautiful huge pool for a very welcome swim.

DAY 7 | Pakse – TBA

This is a day for riding out of Pakse and into the villages. I leave this day fairly open as we may encounter longer than expected riding, on some sections of the itinerary. Also some riders may want to fly on the afternoon flight to Bangkok (2.20pm-7.35pm) or stay another night.
