JAPAN ITINERARY (14 DAY)

Fly into Osaka or Tokyo.

11 April/ Day 1: Depart Kyoto to Tottori

A nice easy ride out of  Kyoto through the countryside villages to the north west coast. We stay close to the coast and visit what have been officially the most beautiful villages in Japan. The scenery is wonderful along the Tajima coastal road.

12 April/ Day 2: Tottori to Hamada

Today we visit the famous Tottori Sand Castles before heading to the coastal roads, with visits to small fishing villages and hamlets. After lunch our ride takes us through beautiful remote Villages and small communities way off the tourist trail.

13 April/ Day 3: Hamada to Hiroshima

After breakfast our ride is from the west coast to the east coast and the city of Hiroshima. This is one of my favorite rides as it has such beautiful diverse countryside with very limited traffic. We arrive at our accommodation in Hiroshima in the early afternoon with plenty of time to visit the Peace Memorial Museum. However, those wishing to see other sites have a free afternoon and evening to explore.

14 April/ Day 4: Hiroshima to Saijo

This is an exciting day as we now leave the mainland and cross over to the beautiful mountainous and sparsley populated island of Shikoku.

We ride through Shimanami Kaido via Onomichi. Some highways and local roads take us on this world-famous scenic route with lots of sightseeing along the way.

15 April/ Day 5: Saijo to Shimanto

Our ride today takes us across Shikoku island from the west coast to the East coast. A really beautiful winding scenic road through the mountains to the coastal town of Susaki. The afternoon ride hugs the Pacific coastline to the lively town of Shimanto.

16 April/ Day 6: Shimanto to Usuki ( Kyushu Island)

A ferry ride awaits us in the late afternoon to take us across to Usuki on the island of Kyushu. We will have lots of coastal and countryside riding today. We arrive around 6pm at our accomodation and after a cold beer or two we freshen up and head into this very historic town for bar and restaurant hoping. The sake is very tasty here.

17 April/ Day 7: Usuki to Miyazaki

The first stop today will be a visit to the Historical Landmark and National Treasure, the Usuki Stone Buddas. These stone Buddas are carved in the rock over 1000 years old. Our destination today is a wonderful coastline ride to the subtropical south with many seaside shrines.

Miyazaki is full of history and home of the famous Wagyu beef.

Our accommodation is in the heart of the city and an evening visiting tucked away small restaurants and bars is so much fun.

18 April/ Day 8: Miyazaki to Nejime

After leaving the bustle of Miyazaki it’s not long before we are hugging the Pacific Ocean where mountains meet to water. This was a fantastic ride as we alternate between coastal fishing villages and rural farming villages on our way to our destination, Nejime. This town is a port town and does not see many foreign visitors due to its remote location. That’s why  we love these small places.

19 April/ Day 9: Nejime to Akune

After breakfast we set off for the ferry to take us across to Kagoshima. After departing the ferry we will make our way across country to the small fishing town of Akune. This town is very rarely visited by tourists and really does feel like a small forgotten part of Japan.

Our Accommodation is central and within walking distance of many small streets and restaurants. We will be visiting one of the most beautiful coastal shrines I have seen in Japan.

20 April/ Day 10: Akune to Nagasaki

An early start today (8:00am), as we have a very busy day riding to the city of Nagasaki. The country and coastal riding is full of great scenery. We catch two ferries today and arrive in Nagasaki in the afternoon. We visit the Atomic Bomb Museum which is a must do while in Nagasaki.

A short ride to our accommodation where we can relax and enjoy the sights on Nagasaki.

21 April/ Day 11: Nagasaki to Usuki

A great riding day awaits us as we head back to Usuki. Time to stop and see sights along the way.

22 April/ Day 12

We have a five minute ride to the 9am ferry which takes a couple of hours to arrive in Yawatahama.

Today we ride towards Shimanto and the start of the famous Route 439. This route takes us through the middle of Shikoku island all the way to Tokushima. The riding is spectacular with hidden villages and mountain passes.

23 April/ Day 13

This will be our second day riding the 439 Route and again we will be riding high in the mountains and hills with lots of bamboo forest and small winding forest roads. Absolutely perfect. We will arrive some time in the afternoon in Tokushima.

24 April/ Day 14

This is our final days ride back to Kyoto with spectacular bridge crossings. We arrive around 2pm.
